About

My name is Marshall Shaffer, and I’m all about connecting people with things they love – be it a movie, a product or an experience – in everything I do.

You might think that I use completely different parts of my brain in my various capacities as a paid social media planner, a freelance social media consultant and a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. But I see more overlap than divergence.

I put clear, precise communication first and foremost in all I do, always keeping in mind how larger social forces might shape how an audience will perceive any given message. Be it in formulating a communication strategy, pitching an article or determining the platform through which someone will receive a message, I maintain an end-to-end mindset.

No matter the assignment or venue, I recognize that there is no substitute for exhaustive historical research, contextual thinking and audience insights. Plus, the cross-industry thinking makes me uniquely adaptable – and has led to a number of surprising breakthroughs over the years.

If you’re curious to explore both the breadth and the depth of my experience, please explore the tabs here on my portfolio site. This covers academic, professional and freelance work, but if you have any additional questions, please reach out! I’d love to connect.

  1. Marshall, I trust that all is well with you. I recently read your article comparing the movies “A Hidden Life” and “Jojo Rabbit”, I really appreciate your perspectives on the inspiring and meaningful messages that these two directors gave us with these films. I have a small group of friends that meet every two weeks to discuss movies and what they mean to us. We had discussed A Hidden Life early this year and next week we are going to be talking about Jojo Rabbit, so your article was very helpful. At our last meeting we reviewed the movie Resistance by Jonathan Jakubowicz that deals with a similar theme and I was wondering if you had written anything about this movie?

    • Thanks for reaching out! I have not seen Resistance, so I have not written about it at all. But I’m glad the piece about those other two films was helpful to you!
